Mathematics Updates

Dear parents,

We have completed Unit 6 Numbers to 20.

The children have learnt:

• to count within 20 by making a ten first.
• to read and write numbers 11 t0 20 in numerals and in words.
• to count on from 0 to 20 and count backwards from 20 to 0.
• to compare 2 numbers up to 20 using the terms greater and smaller.
• to compare 3 or more numbers up to 20 using the terms greatest and smallest.
• to arrange 3 or 4 numbers from greatest to the smallest and vice versa.
• to add 2 numbers , one of which is 1, 2 or 3, using the "count on" method.
• to add two 1-digit numbers using the "make 10" method.
• to subtract 1, 2 or 3, using the "count back" method.
• to subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number with/without renaming.
• to add/subtract using vertical algorithm.
• to solve one-step/two-steps word problems on addition/subtraction.

Please reinforce these concepts.

General learning difficulties:

• Some of the children have difficulties comprehending the questions as they cannot read well.
• During the process of making 10 or renaming, the children may only concentrate on one working component and conveniently forget about the other component. In doing 8 + 5 for example, some of them may quote the answer as 3, as they may have forgotten about the component 8 and 2 make 10.

The children may use any of the three methods (Count on/Count back, Make 10 and vertical algorithm) taught to compute their answers. However, working steps should be shown clearly.

Number sentence and word sentence must be presented in word problems.

We have started Unit 7 Shapes today.

Please have your child to complete page 32 to 35 of Shaping Maths Activity Book 1A Part 2.

Also, do remind your child to bring his/her glue stick and scissors for Activity 5 (page 40 to 45) next Wednesday. To aid your child in completing the activity in class on time, please assist him/her to cut out the shapes on page 43 and 45 and put them in small Ziploc bags/envelopes accordingly in Set A, Set B and Set C prior the lesson.

I would be returning the Mathematics file to the class next Tuesday. Do look through your child's work and the progress report that I have prepared. After which, we can confer via email or call if you have any clarifications.
